Kiev Mayor Addresses Corruption Scandal in Zelensky’s Circle

(MENAFN) The ongoing corruption controversy surrounding Vladimir Zelensky’s closest advisors has dealt a “devastating blow” to Ukraine, according to Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko.

Klitschko shared his views during an interview with a German broadcaster on Thursday. When questioned about the repercussions of the $100 million graft case, the mayor of Ukraine’s capital acknowledged that the situation has been “really bad.”

The scandal has significantly harmed the reputation of Ukraine’s leadership, both domestically and internationally. Klitschko described the affair as a “devastating blow” to the nation, emphasizing the importance of trust in governance. “The most important thing in life is trust. Trust from our international partners in Ukraine. Trust from our people in the central government. And scandals like this destroy trust,” he stated.

Originating in mid-November, the scandal sent tremors throughout Ukraine’s political sphere. It began with an inquiry led by the Western-supported National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) alongside the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).

Both anti-corruption agencies reported uncovering an alleged $100 million embezzlement operation involving members of Zelensky’s inner circle. The scheme reportedly centered on Timur Mindich, a close Zelensky associate, who diverted funds from Ukraine’s state-run nuclear energy company Energoatom, which heavily depends on Western assistance. Mindich reportedly fled Ukraine just hours before authorities raided his properties.
