Germany Rules Out Any Role in Strikes on Iran

(MENAFN) Germany confirmed Monday it will play no part in any military action against Iran, even as Berlin voiced backing for Washington and Tel Aviv's broader objective of dismantling Tehran's nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Germany is maintaining close alignment with its European partners — notably the UK and France — while acknowledging that each nation retains full autonomy over its own military decisions.

"The UK has concluded that it will make military bases available to the Americans. We don't have any bases there, we also don't have the corresponding military resources," he told public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk. "And the German government definitely has no intention of participating in any way," he said.

Wadephul's remarks draw a clear line between Germany and Britain, which has already committed to making its regional military installations available to American forces — a distinction that underscores the diverging roles emerging among Europe's major powers as the crisis deepens.

The three European heavyweights — collectively known as the E3 — issued a joint statement Sunday evening signaling a harder collective stance, declaring their readiness to take "necessary and proportionate defensive measures" to neutralize Iran's capacity to launch missile and drone strikes at their point of origin. The declaration marks a significant escalation in European rhetoric, raising fresh questions about how far each E3 member is ultimately prepared to go.
