Germany, France Advocate Political Framework After Iran Conflict
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said during a panel discussion in Berlin with his French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot that discussions should be organized with Gulf states to develop a new regional security architecture.
Wadephul, who recently visited Israel, the Greek Cypriot Administration, and several Gulf countries, noted that European involvement had been requested by his interlocutors as a potential catalyst for talks.
He emphasized that Israel and the US should notify Europe once their military goals in Iran are achieved if they wish to engage in a political process, adding that he does not anticipate a change of government in Tehran or a purely military resolution to the conflict.
Meanwhile, Barrot highlighted the risk of regional instability caused by the US-Israel campaign against Iran, warning that it could trigger new migration waves and renewed terrorism. He stressed the need for a post-conflict plan to ensure security, stability, and a form of regional integration.
Reports note that US and Israeli forces launched attacks on Iran on February 28, ending nuclear negotiations that had been mediated by Oman. The campaign was justified on the grounds of dismantling Iran’s nuclear program and neutralizing threats from the “Iranian regime.”
The ongoing strikes have reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with numerous senior political and military figures. In response, Tehran has carried out retaliatory attacks on Israel, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US bases, disrupted global markets and aviation, and effectively restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route, sending prices higher.
