German Auto Workers Protest Job Cuts, Plant Closures
Employees from the country’s major automakers, along with workers from numerous large and small suppliers, participated in protests held at roughly 280 sites. Demonstrations took place in major automotive hubs including Wolfsburg, Zwickau and Stuttgart.
IG Metall Chairwoman Christiane Benner criticized what she described as years of poor management and ineffective corporate responses to the industry’s difficulties.
“Managements must finally understand: throwing people out will not save the economy,” she said. “Success will only come through innovation and bold investments in products, technology, and production sites.”
The union said workers from Volkswagen, its subsidiaries, suppliers and partner companies involved in areas such as development and transportation took part in the demonstrations. Employees from MAN and Bosch also joined the protest in Salzgitter.
The demonstrations came ahead of upcoming collective wage negotiations. IG Metall is calling for increased investment in German manufacturing facilities while seeking to maintain the 35-hour working week.
The union has also called on the German government to take measures aimed at supporting the automotive sector, including reducing electricity costs and cutting bureaucratic requirements.
