Former German Intelligence Chief Arrested Over Alleged Espionage

(MENAFN) Former German intelligence chief August Hanning has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of espionage and treason, in a case that could develop into a major intelligence scandal in Germany.

Federal prosecutors are investigating Hanning, who headed Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, known as the BND, from 1998 to 2005. A second individual is also reportedly under investigation in connection with the case.

The allegations include the acquisition of state secrets, treason and espionage on behalf of a foreign power. According to reports, investigators are examining whether Hanning obtained classified information from a former senior member of the BND and intended to use the material in connection with his private consulting activities.

Reports said Hanning allegedly paid the former BND staff member in exchange for classified information. Investigators are examining claims that the material was subsequently intended to be transferred or sold to foreign parties.

The investigation also concerns secret documents that were allegedly provided to Hanning years after he had left his position as head of the intelligence service. The material was reportedly supplied by his former office director, who had previously worked with him at the BND.

Authorities are now examining whether the classified information obtained by Hanning was subsequently passed on to foreign intelligence services or other foreign actors.

The allegations are particularly significant because of Hanning’s former position at the BND, which is responsible for gathering and analyzing foreign intelligence on behalf of the German government.

Hanning led the agency for seven years before leaving office in 2005. His subsequent work included activities in the private sector, including consulting, according to the reports surrounding the investigation.

The case involves allegations that remain under investigation, and the reported claims have not been established in court.

The investigation has nevertheless drawn significant attention because it involves a former head of Germany’s main foreign intelligence agency and allegations concerning the handling and possible transfer of highly classified state information.

Reports have described the affair as potentially one of the most significant espionage cases in the history of modern Germany, particularly given the senior position previously held by Hanning and the nature of the information investigators are examining.
