German Youth Group Demands Policy Changes Ahead of Nationwide Protests
“We can no longer stand by and watch as you gamble away our future. Your austerity policies are stripping us of all hope,” the Gen Z Regelt (Gen Z handles it) group said in its online letter.
The student-led initiative criticized reductions in social spending, the government’s response to the climate crisis, its perceived lack of attention to young people’s concerns about wars and conflicts, and proposals to reintroduce compulsory military service.
“All this is happening while you refuse to listen to us, do not take our fears seriously, or consider our objections. We’ve had enough,” the group said. “Your policies are driving our future into a dead end! That is why, on October 31st, we are taking to the streets in over 20 cities—peacefully, loudly, and with determination.”
The initiative brings together secondary school and university students, apprentices and young professionals. It is organizing major demonstrations in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne, alongside events in 27 other cities. Organizers said more than 150,000 people had registered online to participate.
The group emphasized that all demonstrations would be peaceful and outlined a series of demands directed at Merz and his coalition government.
Its priorities include “money for schools instead of cuts” and “an affordable life,” with public concerns given greater attention. The group also called for a fairer sharing of financial burdens “instead of saving on the younger generation,” a firm “no to conscription,” stronger safeguards for fundamental rights “instead of expanding surveillance,” and meaningful climate action to protect young people’s future.
